Target group:
Ethnic minorities
Objectives
• To provide a welcoming environment for asylum seekers and refugees
• To support the learning of English language and customs in an informal environment
• To promote reading for information and for pleasure
Main activities
Library staff work in partnership with Wesley Hall Methodist Church to run the club which aims to provide simple conversation and assistance in learning to read English. Participants are encouraged to join the library and are accompanied in visits to the library and other venues around the Borough in order to gain confidence in daily life.
Impact
The club is part of a wider programme of activities for asylum seekers on offer through Wesley Hall. Many participants have gained confidence through attending the English Club and progress to independent use of library services.
What was successful?
Partners have been able to access funding to improve resources available to the club.
What lessons were learned?
There is a great demand for informal learning opportunities from groups or individuals who may not be able or wish to access formal courses. Library projects may be able to offer these opportunities but considerable investment of staff time may be necessary.
