Key audience
All Year 7 pupils.
Purpose
• To publicise the Booked Up scheme which offers all Y7 pupils a free book.
• To assist Y7 pupils in choosing a title from the Booked Up scheme.
• To encourage pupils to investigate books they might not normally choose.
• To encourage teamwork and social bonding among the new Y7 pupils.
• To show that reading can be fun!
About the
We wanted to create an air of excitement about the excellent Booked Up scheme which is run by Booktrust in the Autumn term.
First of all the pupils received their leaflets from their English teachers who explained the scheme to them. I also made sure that the books were displayed prominently in the Library.
The following week each Y7 pupil took part in a half-day drama workshop organised by the Library Manager and run by Dave Cryer, Writer and Drama Teacher. The sessions covered all the titles on offer and Dave organised readings and drama activities based on them. The pupils all took part with enthusiasm.
In the next two days pupils made their choice from the Booked Up titles.
When the books are received later this term we will continue the excitement by holding a ‘Booked Up Breakfast’ during tutor period where all the pupils will receive juice, toast and be presented with their books.
EVIDENCE OF IMPACT
In the days following the drama workshops I noticed the following:
• a high demand for the Booked Up titles;
• pupils discussing the books and workshops as well as sitting reading them at breaks;
• some of the stuggling Y7 readers dragging their 6th form reading buddies into the library to show them the books and also choosing from these titles to read with their buddies.
FEEDBACK FROM PUPILS
“Helpful and humorous”
“Fun and I liked the sound of the books”
“It was fun and boosted up my confidence”
“I think it was extremely fun and I definitely know what book I am getting”
“It helped me to choose my book in a fun way”
“Before I thought 1 book was good, now I like all the books”
“I enjoyed finding out about the different books and then acting them out”
FEEDBACK FROM STAFF
“I have been surprised and delighted to see that the most popular title when it came to making a choice was ‘Read Me and Laugh’, the humorous poetry anthology! It was also ordered by more boys than girls. I don’t think this would have been the case, or that pupils would even have considered it, without the enjoyment it gave them during the workshops.” Sally Dring, Library Manager
